Hello - my name is Henrik Beck (56), I am an addiction counselor and project manager at Alfa-Fredensborg. In addition, I am the inventor and developer of the HB model, as well as the author of the model's eight manual-based workbooks.
For more than 23 years, I have continuously educated myself in Denmark and at the Florida School of Addictions Studies, where I have also been associated as a teacher in handling clients with antisocial personality traits.
Among other things, I am certified: addiction counselor, psychotherapist (2-year basis), CENAPS treatment specialist, recovery coach, life & business coach and mindfulness instructor. For more than 23 years, I have contributed new ideas, knowledge and experience to the field of treatment in Denmark and abroad, as a therapist, teacher, author and concept developer.
My newest project is the HB model, which is a bio-psycho-social alcohol and drug treatment model, as well as a holistic health model and a relapse prevention therapy model. The HB model is a multi-flexible treatment concept with a proven method, a high degree of client involvement, and a series of eight manual-based workbooks.
The last three years have been spent developing and adapting the HB model to an inpatient treatment program at Alfa-Fredensborg.
I have done this in close cooperation with the fantastic treatment team consisting of several certified therapists, social workers, nurses, yoga and mindfulness teacher, health advisor, educators, psychiatrists and psychologists, all with many years of experience in the field of alcohol and drug treatment.
My journey to develop and offer alcohol and drug treatment based on kindness, love and compassion, has deep personal imprints, which come from a long life on the streets as both homeless, criminal and drug addict.
Personal experiences and impressions, that has left deep traces in my body and soul. Imprints, gathered from good and bad experiences in a long life of drug addiction, drug treatment and from a long life in recovery.
When I look back on my life today, it was 22 limit-seeking and life-destroying years on drugs, before I decided, at the age of 33, to "grow up" and get my life under control.
If I must describe myself very briefly today, then I am "a survivor", who has been lucky to get out of the "hard life on drugs", with some good resources and a motivation to rediscover myself.
Since I became drug-free, I have worked daily to (re)build a completely new life, which today includes: an exciting job, good friends, travel, sports, a wonderful girlfriend and lovely children.
In addition, I have taken refuge in Buddhism and live a life as a practicing Buddhist.
When I took my first "shot of heroin" at the age of 15, I believed deep in my heart, that I had found the meaning of life and myself. At the time, I was living by the illusion, that all people who didn't use drugs were idiots, who hadn't discovered the true meaning of life.
For the next 22 years, that illusion led me to a long and painful journey where, among other things, I experienced negative consequences such as: a life in poverty, periods of deep depression, long-term homelessness, countless drug overdoses, deaths among close friends, daily criminal activities, illness and accidents, five years in prison, divorces, traffic accidents, interrupted studies, dismissals from jobs, countless enrollments in drug treatment and even more admissions to various psychiatric hospitals.
This meant that when I, as a 33-year-old, enrolled in the 6th drug treatment, I was both scared and completely broken down physically, mentally and emotionally.
Life on drugs had put me in a life situation where I needed detox and massive support, so that I could slowly rebuild myself and my life.
But there, in the biggest crisis of my life, I had several experiences with an addiction counsellor, which I will never forget and which, unconsciously, has been my driving force to develop the HB model later in life.
I met a cold and insensitive addiction counselor, who was both unpleasant and borderline transgressive towards me and many others at the treatment center.
I still remember the feeling of being talked down to and constantly being pressured to do things, that I basically didn't want to do.
There in the middle of the biggest crisis of my life - I decided to work purposefully on training to become an addiction counsellor. In addition, I promised myself that I would never subject another person to the unprofessional, confrontational and unempathetic treatment, I had received.
But it was also during the same course of treatment, that I met my first great source of inspiration and who later became my very good friend and mentor.
He was a fantastic addiction counsellor, with a "heart of gold", who was incredibly kind and who saw me as a person in crisis, who needed lots of care and support to find my way back in life.
It was these two very different meetings, with two very different views of humanity, that were the reason, I started working with alcohol and drug treatment.
It was also the two experiences that, in their own way, have been my great driving force to develop the HB model, which is based on meeting people with kindness, love and great compassion.
